Stanthorpe to Ballandean bike trail

The Stanthorpe to Ballandean bike trail was opened in 2013. It is an on-road, well sign-posted trail that starts from outside the Visitor Information Centre in Leslie Parade, Stanthorpe. Here you will find parking, toilets and a coffee shop inside the information centre. The trail is a 30km one-way journey using the quiet back roads through the areas south of Stanthorpe. The trail is mostly sealed with the exception of two short gravel sections. It is undulating with the longer climbs nearer the start. The second half of the ride is easier than the first.

The altitude of the greater Stanthorpe region averages around 800 metres above sea level and the air is fresher and smog and pollution free. In the summer months the average daytime temperature is 28 degrees with very little humidity. Daytime winter temperatures average around 17 degrees, making it pleasant to journey around by bicycle any time of year. The Granite Belt experiences 4 distinct seasons each with their own special features.

Spring will blow you away with the beautiful colours of the wild flowers growing along the roadside. Summer is the season to see and smell fresh produce including tomatoes and capsicums as you cycle along the trail. The grapes growing on the vines are a sight not to be missed. Autumn is a spectacle of falling leaves and changing colours. Winter is all about rugging up and cycling to cellar doors with roaring fires and local red wine.

Whether it’s a 3 course gourmet lunch or a pie from the local servo, you will find places to refuel as you cycle along the trail. Another option is to take a picnic and stop at a winery or when you find that perfect spot.

If it's award winning wineries that you are looking for then you won't be disappointed, you can pedal to cellar doors and listen to the wine makers stories as you enjoy a well deserved wine tasting. You could easily forget you are in Australia as this is so very European.

As you approach Ballandean the vast array of vineyards come into sight and you are now nearing the end of your adventure. If a cold beer is needed, Ballandean Tavern is across the road from the end of the bike trail. More wineries can be found further along Sundown Road.
